Djedovic Handanovic from Paris: First Serbian Nuclear Power Plant by 2040
At the 2026 Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris, the Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, stated that Serbia aims to become part of the global nuclear renaissance. Acting as the envoy of President Aleksandar Vučić, she emphasized that bold energy decisions are essential to provide a stable foundation for economic growth and the development of emerging technologies

Goal: Nuclear Power Plant on the Grid by 2040
The Minister noted that Serbia, as a “newcomer” in the field, is currently implementing Phase 1 of its nuclear program development in accordance with IAEA guidelines. This phase is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, which will provide the necessary data for making an informed decision on the next steps.
According to her, Serbia should build the necessary institutional, regulatory, and professional capacities by 2032 to select a technology and enter the construction phase, with the ultimate goal of having the first nuclear power plant online around 2040.
Cooperation with France and the IAEA
Đedović Handanović announced that a high-level delegation from the French utility EDF will soon visit Serbia, where a letter of intent is expected to be signed. The cooperation will include the preparation of four key studies focusing on human resources, legislative framework analysis, and public opinion surveys. Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of technical support from the IAEA through scholarship programs, training, and the development of safety standards.
“Nuclear energy provides a solid base for the next 50 years. This will have a positive impact on domestic industry, creating new value chains and jobs, while strengthening our base of engineers and technicians,” the Minister concluded.
