Electricity consumption records continue to increase
The cold weather in January brought historic records in electricity consumption: MAVIR (the Hungarian Transmission System Operator) recorded the highest gross system load ever measured on January 8, followed by January 9, and most recently on the morning of January 13.
That earlier peak had been recorded by MAVIR nearly a year ago, on January 20 2025.
Although the four units of Paks Nuclear Power Plant remained one of the cornerstones of domestic electricity generation during the peak consumption period, Hungary still had to rely on more than 3200 MW of electricity imports. By comparison, the two 1200 MW units of Paks II Nuclear Power Plant will be capable of supplying up to 2400 MW of electricity demand.
