One of the most widely implemented nuclear reactors in the world is transitioning to serial construction.
With 41 reactors either in operation or under construction, Hualong One currently ranks first in the world in terms of deployment scale among individual reactor projects. China now intends to build on this success as part of its strategy to peak carbon emissions by 2030.
Fully developed and manufactured domestically, Hualong One is capable of generating up to 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually — enough to power approximately one million people.
Several reactors are already being prepared for full-scale operation. In the eastern province of Zhejiang, the Cangnan project is in the final stages of commissioning before connecting to the power grid. New power units are also under construction in the southern province of Guangdong, as well as in the eastern provinces of Shandong and Jiangsu.
China is also expanding the capacity of its Changjiang nuclear base on Hainan Island. This facility is the largest Hualong One reactor complex in the world and has recently completed the first phase of construction.
According to a report by CGTN, the world's first Hualong One unit — Fuqing-5 in Fujian province — will undergo its first fuel reload early this year. This is a scheduled "status check" after five years of commercial operation. To date, the unit has generated over 43 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
According to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), each Hualong One reactor prevents the emission of about eight million tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere each year.
