Rosatom – Guardian of Strategic Resources: Rare Metals Industry Congress "REDMET-2026"
The Scientific Division of the Russian state nuclear giant Rosatom is organizing in May the International Congress “REDMET-2026”, which will in Moscow bring together experts from 15 countries. This event confirms Rosatom's transformation from a nuclear company into a global leader in the sector of critical materials necessary for the energy transition and high-tech medicine

The organizer of the gathering is AD „Giredmet“, an institute operating within the Rosatom Scientific Division, and the congress comes at a time when the race for control over rare metals (such as lithium, for example) is becoming a key point of geopolitical competition. About 500 delegates from Russia, India, China, Southeast Asian countries and Africa are expected to participate.
Although nuclear energy is Rosatom's core activity, this congress highlights their role in the development of non-nuclear technologies without which modern electronics, optics, and energy storage would be impossible. The scientific program covers four key areas:
- Mineral resources and sustainable processing: how to obtain raw materials in an environmentally friendly way.
- Magnetic and composite materials: the basis for electric vehicle motors and wind turbines.
- Pure substances and electronics: materials for photonics and advanced semiconductors.
- Digital design of materials: the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating materials with new characteristics.
A special segment will be devoted to the application of these materials in nuclear medicine and digital modeling, which are areas in which Rosatom is currently conducting pioneering research in its 13 scientific institutes.
Focus on the Global South and technological sovereignty
Andrej Golinej, director of the Chemical-Technological Block in the Rosatom Naka department, emphasized that the goal is to create a global platform for forming sustainable value chains. The co-chairman of the board, Konstantin Ivanovskih, was even more direct, noting that Russia is creating new technological competencies for which there is “stable interest in developing markets,” such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Africa.
