Russia has shipped the first reactor block for a floating nuclear power plant in the Far East.

The Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced the completion of production and shipment of the first small modular reactor block RITM-200S for a new floating nuclear power plant being built for industrial use in the Russian Far East.
Rosatom called this event an important milestone in the development of its small-scale nuclear energy program.
The statement said that the reactor was manufactured at the ZiO-Podolsk plant near Moscow, part of Rosatom's machine-building division. It will be installed on the lead floating power plant, known as PEB-106 (Floating Power Plant-106).
Rosatom stated that completing the reactor production allows the project to move to the next stage of construction, including the installation of power equipment inside the hull of the vessel.
Floating power plants are being built to provide electricity to the Baimsky mining cluster in the Chukotka region.

According to Rosatom, on each barge of PEB-106 there will be two RITM-200S reactors, each with a 58 MW electrical power output.
RITM-200S is based on the RITM-200 reactor used on Russia's newest nuclear icebreakers.
In the IAEA catalog of small modular reactors, the RITM-200 family is described as using an integrated reactor layout, with the key equipment of the primary circuit located inside or directly around the reactor vessel, making the installation more compact than loop-type marine reactors.
Commissioning is planned for 2027.
Igor Kotov, head of Rosatom's machine-building division, said that the reactor completed for PEB-106 has become the 14th RITM reactor built by this division. According to him, another 14 RITM-200 reactor units for icebreakers and floating energy installations are currently at various stages of production at the division's facilities.

According to design materials provided to the IAEA by Rosatom in 2023, the floating power unit program for the Baimsky mining project began in 2021 with the signing of an agreement with the operator GDK "Baimskaya".
In 2022, permission for detailed design was obtained, and construction of two hulls began in China later that year.
According to the materials, commissioning of the first two floating NPPs PEB-106 is planned for 2027, followed by a third NPP in 2028 and a fourth in 2032.
In 2020, Russia became the first in the world to commission a floating nuclear power plant, Academician Lomonosov, which provides energy to consumers in the remote town of Pevek in Chukotka. The station houses two commercial KLT-40S reactor blocks, each with a capacity of 35 MW.

The 55 MW RITM-200 project is the successor to the KLT-40S and is being developed for both marine and onshore applications.
Rosatom plans to commission the first commercial onshore RITM-200N in 2028 near Ust-Kuyga, Yakutia, about 4,000 km east of Moscow in the country’s Far East. In 2024, Russia and Uzbekistan signed a protocol to begin work on the project to build a nuclear power plant that would include six RITM-200N power units.
