SE RAW has opened the National Radioactive Waste Repository – one of the most modern in Europe.

The official opening ceremony of the National Repository for Low- and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste (NLRW) took place in Bulgaria, built at the "Radiana" site within the two-kilometer zone of preventive protective measures of the Kozloduy NPP. It is one of the most modern repositories in Europe, completing the cycle of safe management of radioactive waste.
“Thanks to this facility, Bulgaria is among the leading countries developing nuclear energy. Thus, we are practically closing the cycle of safe operation and environmental protection. Today is the culmination of the efforts of many people,” said the Minister of Energy, Traycho Traykov, who cut the ribbon together with the executive director of the state enterprise "Radioactive Waste", Dilyan Petrov.
The official opening marked the beginning of the first stage of the repository intended for radioactive waste generated from the decommissioning of units 1–4 of the Kozloduy NPP. Dilyan Petrov emphasized that the repository will not store spent nuclear fuel and waste from other countries. The first stage is intended exclusively for low- and intermediate-level waste generated during decommissioning work.
The facility received an operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Agency on April 3, 2026, as well as act No. 16 from the National Construction Control Authority in March 2026.
