The transition of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to Westinghouse fuel is ongoing.
In 2027, the 5th reactor unit of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to fully transition to using Westinghouse fuel. This was announced by the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Tsanko Bachiyski. Currently, the process of transitioning to the new fuel is proceeding without issues thanks to a trial batch of Westinghouse fuel assemblies (TVEL), reported BNR reporter Natalia Ganchovska. In 2028, it will be definitively determined how suitable this fuel is, whether its operation will continue, or if other measures will need to be taken, added Tsanko Bachiyski.
The shutdown of the reactor unit for scheduled annual maintenance is scheduled for May 9, during which another batch of American fuel will be loaded. The four-year phased transition to Westinghouse nuclear fuel began in 2024.
Until then, the Bulgarian nuclear power plant operated entirely on Russian fuel.
