NuScale announces an increase in SMR power.
NuScale Power has announced a 25% increase in the power output of its small modular reactor, the NuScale Power Module, which it says will lead to significant cost savings. The company also announced the release of smaller-sized power plant options—four- and six-module configurations—in addition to its flagship 12-module installation.

The NuScale energy module is a pressurized water reactor in which all components for generating steam and heat exchange are combined into a single integrated block. Yesterday, the company announced that after conducting cost optimization work using advanced testing and modeling tools, it concluded that the unit can generate 77 MW (gross) per module, or about 924 MW for the 12-module power plant. The increase in output power has been achieved without any significant changes to the NPM technology.
The increase in generating capacity reduces the initial capital cost of constructing a 12-module power plant from the expected $3,600 per kilowatt to approximately $2,850, the company reported. “In addition, the scalable 12-module power plant is now approaching a size that will make it a true competitor in the gigawatt power plant market,” it added.
According to NuScale representatives, the more compact four- and six-module power plants will provide customers with greater options in terms of size, output power, operational flexibility, and cost due to reduced footprint and an emphasis on simplifying construction, shortening construction timelines, and lowering costs. “This new solution allows NuScale to meet a broader range of customer needs, including electricity supply for small grids, such as island nations; remote autonomous settlements; industrial and government facilities; and replacing coal-fired power plants that consume less energy and help customers meet air quality standards,” the company stated.
In September, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued a permit for the standard design of a small modular reactor from NuScale with a capacity of 50 MW per module, allowing this design to be used in license and permit applications for construction, operation, and production in the U.S. Previously, NuScale had stated plans to apply for the standard design of a 60 MW version, which will require additional review by the NRC. The company has now indicated that the power increase will be considered by the NRC in this application, which it plans to submit in 2022.
