Beijing, April 22 /Xinhua/ -- As of the end of 2025, the total installed capacity of nuclear power plants in China exceeded 120 million kW, making the country the world leader. This was announced by Wang Shoujun, chairman of the Chinese Nuclear Society.
Wang Shoujun stated at the opening ceremony of the 2026 China International Nuclear Industry EXPO on Wednesday that by the end of last year, China had a total of 112 nuclear power units that were either operational, under construction, or had received construction permits.
China continues to pursue an active, safe, and orderly development of nuclear energy, Wang Shoujun stated, adding that "controlled nuclear fusion" and "coastal nuclear energy" have been included among the key projects of the country for the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).
Wang Shoujun noted the increasingly prominent role of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security and promoting "green" development against the backdrop of accelerating global energy transformation.
According to him, in recent years, China’s nuclear industry has embarked on a path of rapid and high-quality development, strengthening its innovation capacity in nuclear technologies, including third and fourth generation nuclear power technologies, small modular reactors, and advanced nuclear fuel cycles.
The four-day EXPO in Beijing attracted nearly 300 domestic and international enterprises and organizations to participate. In addition to showcasing a wide range of technological equipment, the event hosts a series of high-level academic forums, technical exchange meetings, product presentations, and workshops for popularizing scientific knowledge.
"As an important platform for showcasing global achievements in nuclear science and deepening international cooperation, this year's EXPO is expected to further enhance cooperation between the relevant circles of the domestic and international nuclear industries," added the chairman of the Chinese Nuclear Society.
